Venous & Arterial Wound Care
Wounds on the lower legs are often related to how well blood is circulating — either returning to the heart (venous) or reaching the tissue (arterial). Understanding which type of circulation issue may be involved helps guide an appropriate care plan.

Who This May Be For
- Patients with swelling, skin changes or open wounds on the lower legs
- Patients with a history of venous insufficiency or varicose veins
- Patients with known or suspected poor circulation in the legs or feet
- Patients whose lower-leg wound has not been formally evaluated
What to Expect
- A focused assessment of the wound location, appearance and surrounding skin
- A discussion of circulation-related history and contributing factors
- An individualized plan for dressing management and monitoring
- Referral or coordination with a vascular specialist when appropriate
When to Seek Care
- A lower-leg wound that developed without significant trauma
- Persistent leg swelling, skin discoloration, or a feeling of heaviness
- A wound accompanied by cold skin, pale color, or diminished pulses
- A leg wound that has not improved with basic home care
